Hi everyone!

Its Brian B from Derby City Swing. I love dancing and I love Louisville. I want to bring you the culture of Louisville and the Kentucky Derby through Derby City Swing. Here is a little info to help get you in the mood for a Kentucky Derby themed West Coast Swing weekend! I can’t wait to see you.

All the best,

Brian B

The Kentucky Oaks is the 4th largest horse race in the world. (behind the triple crown) The race is for 3 year old fillies (girl horses) The winning horse gets a garland of Pink Lilly’s so the color of the day is pink!

Wear anything you want thats pink on friday night at Derby City Swing!

Official drink for the Kentucky Oaks is the ‘Lilly’ its pink too!

The Kentucky Derby is a thoroughbred race held annually in Louisville KY on the first Satruday in May capping a 2 week long Derby Festival! The distance is one and a quarter miles know as the “most exciting 2 minutes in sports”  for its approximate duration in length. Its also called the “run for the roses” for the blanket of roses draped over the winner.

DERBY FASHION:  There are no hard and fast rules for Derby attire but it is a place to see and bee seen.

LADIES: Big hats of course for the ladies but the ‘Fascinator’ trend is all the new rage. (its also way better for dancing!) These are chic headpieces are made from a woven disc topped with feathers and netting and secured to your head via a comb or headband. They can be simpler to wear than a hat, and won’t give you hat hair! Pastels and bold colors help you make a statement!

GUYS: Hats are also a thing for the guys at Derby but make sure you make a statement with loud colors and pastels.  Oh and don’t forget your bowtie! On Derby day a cool jacket is a must but for Derby City Swing you are welcome to leave it at home that is of course if you’re ok letting the ladies show you up 😉

EVERYONE if you wanna go crazy and get dressed up.. great, but don’t feel obligated… be comfortable! This is you’re weekend and I want you to enjoy it the way you want!

The official drink of the Derby is the Mint Julip

Saturday night there will be a BOWTIE contest for guys and a FASCINATOR contest for the gals just to have some fun.

The winners will get a special Kentucky themed prize….
